Provenance: Purchased from Mahoney’s nursery in Winchester, MA for Reddit 2016 nursery stock competition. 5-6′ high, sex unknown.

Date Acquired: 4/8/2016

Approx. Age at Acquisition: ~10-15 years


-4/2016, Plant purchased, cut back to major branches, photographed, roots washed of compact clay from B+B. Potted in large training box in 45/45/10 soil mix.

-7/2016, Plant has grown vigorously, many new shoots 1-2′ high. Shoots cut back and major branches pruned and sealed with cut paste. New shoots pinched out to balance vigor. Leaves show signs of bacterial infection. Diseased leaves removed. Light aphid infestation treated with neem oil and washed off with hose.

-9/2016, Bacteria no longer visible. Uro carved with Dremel to hide large branch removal in front of tree. New branches pruned back and wired for Reddit competition photographs. Will be reduced further in spring.

-10/10/2016, Fertilized with low-nitrogen fertilizer to prep for dormancy.

-Tree given away 11/30/16 to Somervile Reddit user to make room for other trees.
